How is the distance calculated?
To fairly calculate the distance traveled, a standardized step length of 65 cm is used. This results in the following formula for calculating distance:
Number of steps * 0.65 meters/step = distance in meters
Distance in meters / 1000 = distance in kilometers
Example:
10,000 steps * 0.65m/step = 6,500 m / 1,000 = 6.5 km
How is the amount of CO2 saved calculated?
To calculate the CO2 savings, we compare the distance covered by steps with the CO2 emissions of a mid-range car that would have covered the same distance. The car emits 139g of CO2 for every kilometer driven. This results in the following formula for calculating CO2 savings:
Distance in km * 0.139 kg/km = CO2 savings in kg
Example:
10km * 0.139kg/km = 1.39kg
How is activity energy calculated?
To calculate the activity energy, we use a statistical value that indicates the energy consumed per step as 0.0325 kcal. This results in the following formula for calculating activity energy:
Number of steps * 0.0325 kcal/step = activity energy in kcal
Example:
10,000 steps * 0.0325 kcal/step = 325 kcal
Questions about the SchritteApp
Where do I get the SchritteApp?
The steps app is available for smartphones with iOS (iPhone) and Android. You can easily download it for free from the AppStore or Google Playstore. Click on one of the buttons or simply search for “SchritteApp” in the AppStore.
Works with your smartphone:

What can the SchritteApp do for you?
The SchritteApp is used to transfer all of the steps recorded with your smartphone for a day to your ChallengePortal. These steps can be recorded by the smartphone itself or, if you use a wearable (e.g. smartwatch, fitness band), can also be recorded by this wearable and transmitted to your smartphone. The steps that your smartphone shows you always count.
Does the SchritteApp cost me anything?
No, the steps app is completely free for you. Only the transfer of steps uses up some of your mobile data volume if you are logged into a mobile network and not connected to a WiFi.
Which smartphones does the SchritteApp support?
All current smartphones (no tablets!) that should not be older than 5 years are supported. Make sure that the collection of health data is activated on your smartphone so that steps for transfer can actually be recorded.
- iPhone mit iOS ab Version 12
- Smartphone powered by Android higher than version 7
NOT supported:
- Windows Mobile
- webOS
- Jolla
- Mobile Linux
Tip: For security reasons, always keep your smartphone operating system up to date.

- Log in to the ChallengePortal (website) with your access data as soon as your profile has been activated.
- In the “Use SchritteApp” area on the ChallengePortal (website) you will find a QR code and the data for manually activating the SchritteApp.
- Launch the SchritteApp and scan the QR code when prompted. Alternatively, you can also enter the activation data manually.
Completed! Now you can start transferring your steps from the SchritteApp to the ChallengePortal (website).
At what point can I activate the SchritteApp?
You can only connect the SchritteApp to the challenge portal on the start day of the challenge. Only then will the necessary QR code become visible.
Can I use the Steps app on multiple devices?
No, you have to choose a smartphone with which you want to accompany the challenge. You can only connect (activate) one device to the challenge at a time.
To change your smartphone, log out using the profile button in the steps app on your smartphone that is currently activated for the challenge. You can then activate another/new smartphone as usual.
